Church wedding at the Parish Church of St. Sixtus
As early as 1409, a small Gothic church stood in Niederau, which was enlarged in 1499 and redesigned in Baroque style around 1740. Under Parish Priest Franz Xafer Mayrhofer (1896–1935), the furnishings and interior were widely renewed. In 1970, under Parish Priest Alois Mayr, the church was extended westward according to the plans of architect Prof. Clemens Holzmeister, with furnishings renewed or renovated.

The Kitzbühel Alps are largely located in the Eastern Alps of Tyrol. The so-called Glemmtal Alps lie in Salzburg, while the Kelchsau Alps are in Tyrol. The Kitzbühel Alps region consists of St. Johann in Tyrol, Kitzbühel and its surroundings, the Pillerseetal, Brixental, Wildschönau, and Alpbach.
Thus, the tourism region covers only a small part of the geographical Kitzbühel Alps. Among the best-known peaks are the Kreuzjoch (at 2,558 m the highest mountain of the Kitzbühel Alps), the Hahnenkamm (famous worldwide as the venue of the legendary Hahnenkamm Race), and the Große Rettenstein (the striking rocky peak amidst the grassy mountains).
